Barcelona’s markets date back 2000 plus years and neither chains nor malls are able to end this streak of success
Markets “Mercats” have been the heart, soul and life-blood of cities ever since they exist. Terms such as “urban market” or “farmer’s market” indicate that this once indispensable institution is experiencing a comeback after being substituted by the all-in-one bore me to death malls in most (western) cities today.
This is not the case for Barcelona. Throughout It’s 2000 years of history, markets, whether open-air or in purpose-built halls, have fundamentally shaped the city’s character and commercial status. Support your local market!
